SeaThru is a contemporary waterfront home designed by SweetSparkman Architects overlooking Sarasota Bay, in Sarasota, Florida. This residence was designed for a young couple who was seeking to reconnect with their former hometown.
An intriguing yet non-conforming mid-century modern home originally resided on this site, yet was deteriorating and required heavy repair.
FEMA regulations prevented the design team from renovating this home, which ultimately lead to it’s demolishment. In it’s place, a home that nods to the past while taking on a new, innovative design.
The scope of this project entailed three distinct outdoor environments. The rolling topography of the backyard allows for sweeping views of the bay and Lido Key in the distance.
A sea of grasses and ferns frames the exterior facade, adding contrast to the dark limestone walls. All spaces, even the guesthouse at the far eastern side of the property are afforded views to the bay.
A courtyard nestled between the main house and the guest house provides a private green space for the two young children to play. An expansive gate welcomes guests into the courtyard, effectively an outdoor foyer that leads to the main entry.
Rooflines are separated from walls by clerestory windows, steel columns terminate to thin knife plates, and slabs cantilever just inches above the surrounding grade.
Floating stairs brings you to the upper level that encompasses four bedrooms.
The bathroom of this waterfront home features a mid-century inspired walnut vanity. On the walls, white subway tile with a dark grout.
This waterfront home is idyllic for raising a family with fantastic indoor/outdoor living spaces. The home is comfortable, warm, welcoming and luxurious — paying homage to the area while respecting the history of the land itself, all while having a sense of timelessness.
